Oregon Spectator 175 Years
BY TIM F. LUSSIER, M.A. -- February 5, 2021, marks the 175th Anniversary of the first newspaper published on the West Coast. The Oregon Spectator's story is indeed historic. Our first issue was published February 5, 1846 in “Oregon Country” three years before statehood. During the first decade of publishing Oregon Spectator was a powerful force in the Oregon Territory. The paper ceased printed publication during periods including in 1856 before returning a century later to print again in 1972. After another two decade hiatus Ralph Hatley and partners Bob Ziemer and Rick Beasley resurrected our paper again in September 1993. Now in 2021 our Publisher Ralph Hatley has reorganized our publications incredible history to live out our mission “… to restore faith in local government and the courts.” We continue to focus on Clackamas County, Oregon, the United States and global affairs.
